Q. How can I tell what is running while the machine is on?
Can you
please answer me a question? I am running
XP. I frequently go into
Task Manager
to monitor my PC performance. How can I tell what is running while the machine
is on? Of course I can see the file names of things that are running but some
are very vague about what it is? How do I get specific information on what is
the file name that is eating up processing space while viewing Task Manager?
A.
I recommend that you download and install a very useful tool that I use
everyday. It is called Process Explorer from Sysinternals. This program can
act as a replacement to Task Manager and it includes a bunch of functionality
that is not included with Task Manager. One of the things that it does that
Task Manager doesn't is to give you a full path to the processes that are
running. Also, if you hover the mouse over one of the processes, you get a
little bit of information about the process.
They update the program with additional functionality and fixes quite a bit, so
check back regularly. You can find more information about this tool and
download it from
"http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx
".
